A field mouse’s no good very bad day
I live with so many apex predators that it’s wild to me that I was the one who ended up catching the damn mouse.
To back up a bit
Mastodon was on one this morning: that isn’t super out of the ordinary because he has this...fuck, I guess shall we say antagonistic relationship with light reflections? Had it since he was a kitten; this is probably exacerbated by our house being full of shiny surfaces like desks made of reflective metal, pianos covered in mirrors and glass, copious amounts of disco balls, etc.
The light will hit them just so and make a neat reflection or light spot on the wall. We think it looks pretty! To Mastodon though?
IT’S THE GODDAMN FAE. THE FAE ARE HERE
YOU SAW IT, RIGHT?
So again it’s not that uncommon for him to be chasing something - but usually it’s like mentioned - either a light or something only he can see. But motherfucker? I saw it too.
A tiny mouse bolting under the couch and then under the piano
We built a bit of a barricade around the piano in the hopes that when I moved it, the mouse would try to escape and get stuck - and it actually fucking worked.
I can’t express enough how many cats we live with and how this creature is probably one of the luckiest rodents on the planet to have made it into our place and be caught instead of by infinite teeth but a human who doesn’t want to see it get hurt.
There’s a field not too far from our place that I released it in; I know that by letting it live I run the risk of it trying to return but I like to go out of my way to make sure I don’t have a negative impact on our ecosystem. If I (or the cats) killed it, that’s less food for the owls, hawks and or snakes of which we have a fuckton.
Tell Constance this isn't a good source of food, Mathias
Is it kinda weird to save a thing's life just so it can be properly killed in a different way? Probably? But we're in their territory and I'm trying to do my part lmfao
