I gotta admit, it feels pretty fucking wild to be posting about video game monsters when like, real world monsters1 are out there kidnapping people off the streets.
BUT! There are things I can do and control and I'm very active with those; helping in my local community, providing resources to other communities as I'm able from a distance - at the end of the day I need me to be stable in order to function for the above.
And like, I have no shortage of understanding of how fucked things are. I'm a mixed race person living in a country that's always been at least somewhat hostile toward me and knew this was a likely possibility, but with the blatant return of store brand gestapo I have to be more careful than I used to and it's just fucking exhausting.
If I can restore any sense of mental stability by spending ten minutes a day drawing a [checks notes] hermit crab (What the fuck? That's just a fucking hermit crab? The pokemon company just doesn't try sometimes jfc) then hey, I'm gonna take it. I think the fundamental difference between escapism and self care is finding a balance and not using the self care portion to pretend the horrors aren't happening.

Can we talk about some of the earliest mainstream video games involved the killing of nazis and yet gaming as a subculture has cultivated some of the most virulent white supremacists imaginable? Sad state of affairs↩
