Quiet hours in between the upsetting and heartwarming stuff
My dad's really sick. It's a whole situation I really don't wanna get in to, but that said I live 3,000+ miles away from him. I'm the youngest of five and three of said siblings live within reasonable driving distance, the only other one who lives out of state regularly (like more than once a month as I understand it) travels back and forth.
I haven't been 'home' since I moved to the desert in 2017; I went back to the bay area a few times pre-2020 to play festivals but I was usually in town long enough for load-in, soundcheck, performance and then had to get back on the road.
He's in a bad situation right now, enough that Della worked with my mom to arrange a last minute trip for me to come out and see him for realistically what might be the last time. It's all messy.
Anyway. He's not up for visiting 100% of the time (obviously) so I'm seeing some sights in between. Hilariously on my agenda for tomorrow (because they're closed during the day on Sundays) is to visit the place I wrote about last week that's closing soon, the Art Boutiki.
Anyway while waiting for today's afternoon visit I got to stop by where I used to live in San José's Japantown and I'll probably do a post on that tomorrow but in the meantime, here's me being disheartened to find out that the shave ice counter that has extremely finicky hours (and like, good for them) is closed for the entire time I'll be here.
Can't catch a break, man.
