Got some really cool mail today

Surprise vinyl is kinda the best type of vinyl (Go listen to Dogcatcher)

Photo of a vinyl record with the words 'each time i pass this way feels safer Why that's the very game boy I used!!

I got a pretty rad surprise package in the mail this morning. I'd been asked for my address for this thing so it wasn't a COMPLETE left field but what I thought I was getting was like a download card or a CD - I wasn't expecting a fucking vinyl.

Photo of the record itself coming out of the case; side A contains 'keep your chin up', 'so do ya', 'hey, hey, we'll make it', 'S.R.M. featuring Gift of Gab', and 'portrait of my father'

Dogcatcher is probably one of my favorite bands of the last 15 years. Since we were both up and coming artists in the bay area our paths crossed A LOT from either playing shows together, going to each other's shows, to the point where if either of us had something going on with lineups to fill we'd be the first to call each other, or if we had an opportunity we couldn't do ourselves, we'd refer each other to the bookers. Eventually Dogcatcher became probably the closest thing Curious Quail has to a 'sibling' band, if that makes sense? (Please ignore the time we tied them up in our practice space and had them record a hostage video encouraging people to support our bid for a 2013 radio contest)

close-up of the post-it note attached to the cover - it reads 'Mike, Thank you for contributing the sweet sounds of GameBoy, the first thing you hear on the record!' - Jared + tha boyz

A few years ago, Our drummer Joey filled in for some drum slots while Ramon was unavailable; once Ramon was back, Joey stayed on full-time as percussionist, doing double-band duty. With our violinist Alan having also recorded parts for Dogcatcher before, I was pretty stoked that Jared asked if I could add something for their latest album. It was a real simple ask, just some gameboy drum machine bloops; it did not take me long but I got a huge fucking grin not only at the credits for the track but also, again, getting a whole-ass vinyl in the mail about it. I was gonna buy the damn album when it comes out next week anyway lmao

Back cover of the record with track listing and personnel; KEEP YOUR CHIN UP features Ramon Esquivel: Drums
Joey Guthrie: Percussion
Andrew Heine: Vocals, Electric Guitars, Organ, Piano
Geoff McCann: Electric Guitars
Jared Milos: Bass
Curious Quail's Game Boy: Drum Loop

Anyway you should go check out Dogcatcher. They're incredibly talented, write fucking groovy bangers and if you have the chance to see them live you will dance so hard and your life will be better for it.

Can't wait to throw this on the turntable and see how it sounds.
