Holy Shit We Have A Berry Bush

I thought this was poison ivy because I'm a west coast idiot at heart

We moved to our New England place in the fall of '21 so it wasn't until the following spring that these vine plants with three leaves in the pattern I'd thought was a shoe-in for poison ivy danger (which I'd never seen before, coming from the west coast) started growing in the yard...but that's when I learned that despite having oil that will fuck me up, poison ivy will never have thorns. I idly wondered what this thing was, but knew it wasn't gonna actually harm me and didn't really give it more thought.

Fast forward a few years and goddamn if it isn't a fucking blackberry bush1.

I know I say this like every other blog post on here but I'm a desert creature so when things grow and do nature stuff that's outside of the realm of "cactus and/or palm tree" I get excited beyond what's reasonable.

I saw a bird land in the bushes from my window, struggle a bit and then fly out with a huge berry in its mouth so yesterday before birthdaversary shenanigans I went out and grabbed a bunch of photos of the plants.

I can't stress enough how the yard went from "just flowers and leaves" to "BERRYPOCALYPSE" in a matter of days of me not paying attention. So I did a mini harvest because like, what else was I gonna do?

So yea I guess It's time I learned how to make jam or something cuz this isn't even scratching the surface of what's out there. I'm so excited lmao

Anyway, that's for reading. Here's your end of post cat. Her name is Skitters and she may be tired but she's also silently judging me for being a desert idiot.

  1. It is entirely possible we have BOTH a blackberry and a black raspberry system tangled together because (again I can't stress enough - I don't go here) while the fruits we've harvested LOOK like blackberries, the leaf shapes I'm seeing match both plants. I'll let someone smarter than me in botany clear it up.
