The Cleaner

Notes from the Director of the Salvage Insurance Bureau

Graph paper featuring the label 'Handinote LEGAL' in the top left with a small stamp on the top right reading 'SALVAGE INSURANCE BUREAU' with an image of a green lamp of some kind. The document has a large yellow note taped to the top center with most of the words redacted except 'THE CLEANER'. Beneath it are images of a large, two-legged red mech. One is at a slight angle and the other is facing directly at the camera. There's a smaller, black and white faded mech of a different type next to the one facing forward. They have a singular white glowing eye in the middle, an arm with a large grasping hand on it and where the other arm would be, some kind of rocket-launcher style shoulder weapon. A handwritten note with arrows pointing between the larger and smaller mech reads 'Forgot how much taller these fuckers were'

"You outdid yourself, kid - it was a beautiful memorial, Deyo would have loved it.

Of all the people to get the 'lung, what a loss.

She ever tell you about her first find? The Cleaner they called it, early days of the bureau, lemme find the fil…ah here we go, take a look at this.

See, her team starts investigating the wrecks almost as soon as the Haze settles. Deyo cracks her way into the ship right outside Zone 1, the big one y'know? Finds this thing pretty much intact in the hangar. We were so worried about the Bipeds, but they had these fuckers that were nearly twice the size waiting to go. I guess it's fortunate for us they never saw combat.

Now inside it, there was this ah - not sure what to call it really - a brochure? Sales pitch? It was a different time, we hadn't yet given up on translating their language back then, but there were all these pictures in it of what looked like this thing (with two arms, mind you) transporting supplies, maybe medical teams - doing like, search and rescue in disaster zones?

She found the document kept like a souvenir tacked next to the pilot seat, right by a picture of a sunset over a beach. Horrifying, juxtaposed with the heavy munitions that the thing had been loaded with - it could have leveled the entire goddamn mountain, yet there’s this little booklet of paper showing off what good the machine could do, or I guess what it was originally built for. Deyo was convinced the pilot had kept it as some kind of sad reminder of what should have been.

Gonna miss her optimism a lot.”
