The Godzilla Minus Zero Trailer Has Me Grinning Like An Idiot (Complimentary)
I won't spoil it, go watch it and then come back
Ok, we good?
This has everything I want from classic Godzilla; human focus on solving or investigating the problem (the problem being giant fucking monsters), threat or commentary on nuclear weapons, and then juuuust enough of something slightly otherworldly (other than the giant fucking monsters) like clairvoyance or telepathy; newtype shit, y'feel me?
I loved Minus One despite not having the latter because it told a really compelling story about a dude with way too much trauma falling ass-backward into a found family and then being forced to deal with a giant fucking monster1.
Photo unrelated; my older brother's Shogun Warriors Godzilla toy, passed down to me and now to my kids; Goji's been in my family a long time
In the final scenes of Minus One they set up a potential sequel, but I legitimately didn't know if that would materialize into anything until a teaser appeared months ago for Minus Zero. Lots of speculation online flooded about if there'd be a second monster, who (if any) of the Toho pantheon would show up and I just took it in stride. I'd have been happy with another solo Goji film because I'm a rare outlier in that I'm a long-time Godzilla fan who doesn't like wrestling and those seem to often go hand-in-hand.? I can usually take or leave fights being the "important" part of the movie even if they do have cool moments.
But man, my heart skipped a beat when I heard that familiar trill roar at the end. I'm sure some people are disappointed that it's not a less-used monster from the Toho archive but I personally can't wait to see what Yamazaki's interpretation of Ghidorah will be.
Another partially unrelated photo; I have all these Showa era Japanese trading cards featuring images from the various films but with painted on additional "fire" breath on the monsters, they're pretty wild
Anyway, thanks for reading. Here's your end-of-post cat; her name is Alphys and I know I've used this exact gif on the blog before but it's too good not to pair with this post because the filename is literally add_godzilla_breath.gif and I think that's neat.
The Japanese nationalism / patriotism on display is def pretty jarring following-up from Shin Godzilla which was almost more a critique of Japanese bureaucracy than a monster film, but I still feel that Minus One tells a really good story.↩
